Calvin L. Kerr
Project Manager/Analyst

Cal Kerr’s work for Northern Economics includes feasibility studies, project management, and financial analysis. He has worked on Alaska natural resource projects since he arrived in Ketchikan in 1974. He joined Northern Economics in 2002 and is a Senior Consultant, most recently making a winter trip to the Red Dog mine near Kotzebue. “It was colder than Anchorage but a beautiful winter trip.”

Before coming to Northern Economics, he was a Project Manager and network administrator for an environmental consulting firm. Cal also worked as a forester with fieldwork extending from Ketchikan and Prince of Wales Island, to Amber, Fort Yukon, and Sleetmute.

He is familiar with remote Alaska conditions and economic constraints, as well as transportation issues throughout all seasons. Cal was the director of the Alaska State Forest Nursery and, later, operated a tree seed business specializing in Alaska spruce.

Since 2004, Cal has been an adjunct instructor at the University of Alaska, Anchorage, School of Engineering teaching Project Cost Management…”to a diverse group of students, including clients and competitors!”

When out of the office, Cal enjoys reading, listening to a wide variety of music, and traveling to the lower 48, especially Seattle.

Answers and reflections on some of life’s more important questions:

Claim to fame: During the last full year I was a network administrator, my system was more reliable and available than the toilets! A frozen pipe kept the bathrooms non-functional for almost two days.

Curious about: when the proceeds from the Alaska State Permanent Fund (which he voted for in the 1970s) are diverted to state government operations. We originally forecasted 2000 to 2005.

Idea of fun: a new recipe, familiar friends, and reading.

Why Alaska: We live in a land of extremes and the good parts of Alaska are very good.

Best fish story: On a single trip out of Ketchikan, I caught a salmon, a small squid and a sea cucumber – a southeast Alaska trifecta!

Most memorable Alaska experience: driving an Australia friend north of the Arctic Circle, taking pictures of the event, and turning around to find a tour bus with 50 people taking pictures of us (or maybe it was the sign behind…).
