Foreign Markets and Product Quality for Bristol Bay Salmon

Northern Economics was asked to present findings from recent work assessing the potential effects of restructuring the Bristol Bay Salmon Fishery at a workshop on Quality and Marketing for Alaska Salmon. The workshop was sponsored jointly by University of Alaska Marine Advisory Program, Washington Sea Grant Program, and the University of Alaska Anchorage Institute of Social and Economic Research and took place on January 27, 2003.

Vice President and Senior Fishery Economist Marcus Hartley summarized findings on global prices for salmon products and the conclusion that current low prices levels are likely to continue into the near future. Mr. Hartley also concludes that in spite of the lack of good news in the salmon markets, the Bristol Bay salmon fishery may be able to increase its profitability by restructuring to eliminate the race for fish and by reducing excess harvesting capacity.
